Profile

The Schleswig-Flensburg district is located in the north of Schleswig-Holstein and borders the Flensburg Fjord, the Baltic Sea and Denmark. With an area almost as large as the Saarland, it is the second largest district in Schleswig-Holstein and one of the largest in Germany. Despite its size, only around 200,000 people live here in four towns and 132 municipalities. The most important are the district town of Schleswig and the larger municipalities of Harrislee, Handewitt, Kappeln and Kropp. Flensburg itself is an independent district. The Schleswig-Flensburg district, which was created in 1974 through the merger of the Schleswig and Flensburg districts, is also home to a Danish minority.

Some places in the district deserve special attention: Arnis is the smallest town in Germany with around 300 inhabitants. The former Viking town and UNESCO World Heritage Site Haithabu and Danewerk near Schleswig from the 9th and 10th centuries is historically outstanding.
